Robert A. Pearce | President & Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Pearce is a highly experienced executive with a deep understanding of corporate financial issues including debt and equity capital markets, strategy and planning, acquisitions and divestitures, risk management and investor relations. He was the General Manager and Treasurer of PanCanadian Energy Inc. prior to its merger with Alberta Energy Company (AEC) to form EnCana.
In his various roles at PanCanadian, Mr. Pearce was closely involved with numerous major capital projects and transactions, several of which were complex and innovative breaks from precedents. He was also instrumental in raising significant funds for PanCanadian in the debt capital markets in Canada and the U.S.
Mr. Pearce has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Geological Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration.
Heather L. M. Harris | Vice President Finance & Chief Financial Officer
Ms. Harris brings more than 20 years of financial expertise within the petroleum industry to North West Upgrading. Most recently, Ms. Harris was the Finance Director for OPTI Canada Inc., where she was responsible for the development and establishment of the finance organization for the Long Lake Project. Prior to this, she was the CFO at Albian Sands Energy Inc. – the mine and process plant for the Athabasca Oil Sands Project – during the development from construction through operations.
Ms. Harris has a Bachelor of Commerce in Management Information Systems, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Calgary and is a Certified Management Accountant.
Don Murray | Sr.Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Murray has over 30 years experience in the oil sands upgrading and refining business. His experience includes start-up operations in both refineries and heavy oil upgraders, facilities management, business evaluations and product marketing.
As a principal of Advantage Insight Group, Don has provided business and technical support on upgrader projects, regulatory initiaties, bitumen and products pricing in domestic and international markets including North America, Latin America and Asia.
Mr. Murray has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree (Chemical Engineer) from the University of Waterloo and is a registered Professional Engineer. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society.
Douglas P. Bertsch | Vice President, Regulatory Affairs
Mr. Bertsch has over 26 years of engineering management experience in the development, design and implementation of petroleum industry projects. In his career, he worked with Shell Canada and production equipment manufacturers, including founding and presiding over Plains Oil/Plains Fabrication for several years. He was a project manager and team manager for Quantel/Veco Engineering and Nordic Engineering on a variety of Engineering Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) oil and gas projects for several years.
Most recently, Mr. Bertsch spent seven years with Taylor NGL, where he was project manager on several projects, including the grass-roots construction of a new straddle plant near Joffre, Alberta. In his role at Taylor, he managed all regulatory affairs, and was the public face of the straddle plant project, presenting and supporting project affairs to all levels of stakeholders, partners, local government representatives and regulators.
Mr. Bertsch is a certified Engineering Technologist with a diploma from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences.
Terry S. Kemp | Vice President, Marketing & Business Development
Mr. Kemp is a professional engineer with over 26 years of related experience in the areas of management, business development, transportation, energy marketing and upgrading of heavy oil. In various positions with Imperial Oil, Mr. Kemp completed several commercial projects and was responsible for major facility operations, pipeline operations, engineering and frontier development research. As a past director of the Alberta Chamber of Resources, Mr. Kemp was involved in the National Oil Sands Task Force that developed oil sands policies adopted by the provincial and federal governments. Mr. Kemp recently acted as the managing director for developing the Access pipeline, which is currently in construction and will deliver bitumen production to the North West Upgrading site and into the Edmonton refinery area.
James P. Quinn | Vice President, Engineering
Mr. Quinn has over 15 years experience in the oil and gas industry, specializing in project and engineering management. Mr. Quinn held positions in engineering, construction management, commissioning, and reliability engineering in upstream and refining industries in Canada, Mexico, Kazakhstan and Argentina. Mr. Quinn provided onsite engineering support during the construction of the Lloydminster Upgrader, and administered the mechanical completion of the delayed coker plant. Mr. Quinn was involved in the commissioning and post start-up reliability of the crude unit, the hydrogen plant and the ebullated bed hydrocracker at the Husky Lloydminster Upgrader. He provided post start-up reliability engineering support and maintenance planning guidance to Pemex in the ebullated bed hydrocracker at the Miguel Hidalgo Refinery in Tula, Mexico.
Mr. Quinn successfully completed numerous projects from conception to commissioning and start-up in the Canadian oil and gas industry. He is a Professional Engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Queen’s University.
